Corporate culture is one of those buzz phrases that elicits a feeling of curiosity. When you hear it mentioned, as it so often is nowadays, it makes your ears perk up. What did you say? They sit on exercise balls instead of desk chairs, and play ping pong while sipping on fountain soda from the communal snack bar?

Well folks, that is becoming the norm and the generation behind this newly minted “company culture” phenomenon is… you guessed itmillennials. A generation that prides itself on being independent truth seekers, but abashed by the mention of laziness; millennials now represent the majority of the American workforce.

A company’s culture is the intangible system of governance based on the values, practices and beliefs of an organization’s employees. It’s present in every workday interaction, meeting, email, event and hiring decision. The culture defines the unwritten rules of how a company operates and the major influence is its people. For most, a company’s culture is a top deciding factor when choosing to work for a company.

A healthy corporate culture is essential for a company to thrive based on findings from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business that surveyed more than 1,400 North American CEOs and CFOs.*

  • More than 50% said corporate culture influences productivity, creativity, profitability, firm value and growth rates.
  • Only 15% said their firm’s corporate culture was where it needed to be.

  • Spend time finding the right people

It took our Credico USA office at least four years to build the right team of people. Those four years weren’t easy, but the most important part of building great teams is hiring the right people for every new position created.

Pro Tip: Often companies will have a tenured employee involved with the hiring process to speak on behalf of the company culture and to determine if a candidate is the right fit.

  • Spread positivity not negativity

This isn’t groundbreaking information that we are about to divulge. Keep morale high by spreading positivity. This could be spending extra time to recognize employees’ good work or holding weekly huddles to address any major issues. Company leaders are in one of the best positions to diffuse accurate information about policy changes, leadership changes really any important change that ultimately affects employees further down the chain. Take this tip as an essential component of creating a company culture.

Pro Tip:  Consider utilizing a personality assessment in your hiring process, such as the Myers & Briggs 16 Personalities test.

  • Take breaks (others will too)

Studies show, it’s essential for you to step away from your work to clear your mind to focus on the next task more efficiently. In order to fulfill your duties as an employee, it benefits both you and your employer to take short breaks to reset your mind during the workday.

Pro Tip: Employees should chase a collective goal that reflects the values set by the organization. An important company value is setting a standard for having fun while getting work done.
